By job

Which course do I need for my job?

The usual fit by job or industry. Your employer, school or licensing office has the final word, so check the exact course name they ask for.

Which CPR course each job usually needs
Your jobUsual courseWhy
Nurses and nursing studentsAHA BLS ProviderDrexel's College of Nursing and Health Professions accepts only AHA BLS, and Rutgers School of Nursing asks for AHA BLS certification before clinical courses. Check your unit or program packet.
Community college nursing studentsAHA BLS ProviderThe Community College of Philadelphia nursing program asks for CPR certification at the health care provider level. It does not name the provider, so confirm AHA BLS is accepted.
Hospital staffAHA BLS ProviderNurses, physicians, techs and other clinical staff usually need healthcare provider BLS. Confirm the exact course name with your employer.
Physicians, pharmacists, dental teams and medical assistantsAHA BLS ProviderClinical roles that work with patients usually mean BLS when they say CPR. Confirm the exact course name with your employer or board.
Child care and preschool staffRed Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid CPR AEDPennsylvania child care rules ask for pediatric first aid and pediatric CPR within 90 days of hire, from an approved curriculum and a PQAS-approved instructor. This Red Cross course is on the approved list; confirm the instructor approval with us and your director.
Fitness trainers, coaches and camp staffAHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AEDGyms, certifying bodies and youth programs usually ask for a current CPR and AED card, with first aid. If you care for infants, take the Red Cross pediatric course.
Security, hospitality and building staffAHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AEDOfficers, front desk and event staff are often first to reach someone who collapses. Heartsaver covers first aid, CPR and AED in one AHA card.
Workplace first aid respondersAHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AEDFederal OSHA calls for a person adequately trained in first aid when no clinic or hospital is in near proximity to the workplace. Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED is a common way to meet that.

How it works

How blended learning works

Blended learning splits a CPR course in two: the knowledge part online, at your own pace, and a short in-person session at 1819 John F Kennedy Blvd for the hands-on skills and test. It leads to the same card as a full classroom course.

  1. 1

    Pick your course and date

Choose BLS, Heartsaver or Red Cross. The booking page opens right here on the site.

  2. 2

    Do the online part

AHA courses: buy the online course from the AHA. Red Cross: the online course is included. Finish it before class.

  3. 3

Come in for the skills session

Hands-on practice on manikins and AED trainers at 1819 John F Kennedy Blvd, then the skills test: 60 minutes for AHA, 120 for Red Cross.

  4. 4

    Get your card

Pass the skills test and your AHA eCard or Red Cross certificate is issued the same day you pass. It is valid for 2 years.

AHA BLS Provider

The online part is HeartCode BLS, sold separately by the American Heart Association, not by CPR Philadelphia. You buy it from the AHA, complete it before your session, and bring the certificate of completion. The AHA says the online part takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on what you already know. Finish it before your skills session date: the session is the hands-on practice and test only.

AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED

The online part is the AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED online course, sold separately by the American Heart Association, not by CPR Philadelphia. Complete it before your session and bring the certificate of completion. You can work through it at your own pace. The in-person session at 1819 John F Kennedy Blvd is the hands-on practice and the skills test.

Red Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid CPR AED

The Red Cross online part is included with your booking at CPR Philadelphia. Complete it before your skills session date. The Red Cross says the online part takes about 2.5 hours and must be finished before the skills session. The in-person session at 1819 John F Kennedy Blvd is about 120 minutes, because it covers adult, child and infant skills.

FAQ

CPR classes in Philadelphia: your questions

Where are CPR classes held in Philadelphia?

At 1819 John F Kennedy Blvd, Suite 307, Philadelphia, PA 19103, in Center City, near Suburban Station. Every class and skills session is held there.

Which CPR class should I take?

If you work or study in healthcare, take AHA BLS Provider. If you need first aid and CPR for a job, a gym or a coaching role, take AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED. If your employer or licensing office asks for Red Cross, or you care for children, take Red Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid CPR AED.

Is BLS the same as CPR?

BLS is the healthcare provider level of CPR. Nurses, EMTs, dental teams and other clinical staff usually need BLS. Outside healthcare, Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED or the Red Cross course is usually the right one. Ask for the exact course name in writing if you are unsure.

How long are the classes?

All three are blended. After the online part, the in-person skills session is about 60 minutes for AHA BLS Provider and AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED, and about 120 minutes for Red Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid CPR AED.

Is the online part included?

For the two AHA courses, no: the online part is sold separately by the American Heart Association. For the Red Cross course, yes: the online part is included with your booking.

How long is a CPR certification valid?

All three cards are valid for 2 years: the AHA BLS Provider card, the AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED card and the Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED certificate.

When do I get my card?

The same day you pass the skills session. Your AHA eCard or Red Cross digital certificate is issued the same day, ready to show your employer or program.

Which course do child care providers need in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania child care rules (55 Pa. Code 3270.31) ask staff for pediatric first aid and pediatric CPR within 90 days of hire, with a hands-on session, an OCDEL-approved curriculum and a PQAS-approved instructor. Red Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid CPR AED is on the approved curriculum list. Ask us and your director to confirm the instructor approval before you count a class toward the rule.

Can Drexel or Rutgers nursing students take BLS here?

Yes, anyone can book AHA BLS Provider. Drexel's College of Nursing and Health Professions accepts only American Heart Association BLS, and Rutgers School of Nursing asks for American Heart Association BLS certification before clinical courses. We are not affiliated with either school, so your program packet has the final word.

How do I get to 1819 John F Kennedy Blvd?

By Regional Rail, ride to Suburban Station; there is a street stair at the southeast corner of 18th St and JFK Blvd. By trolley, the SEPTA Metro T lines stop at 19th Street station under Market St. From the L or the B, get off at 15th St or City Hall and follow the underground concourse to Suburban Station. From New Jersey, PATCO's nearest stop is 15-16th and Locust. By car, I-676 has no exit numbers: eastbound, the 23rd St / Benjamin Franklin Parkway exit; westbound, the 22nd St off-ramp.

Choose your course and press Book. The course booking page opens right here on the site, where you pick a date and pay. If it does not load, the link in the booking window opens it in a new tab.

Can I ask a question before booking?

Yes. Call or text (215) 770-8788. You can also email support@cprphilly.com.

Do you offer onsite CPR training for groups?

Yes. We teach all three courses on-site at workplaces in Philadelphia and nearby, including Rittenhouse and Center City West, University City, Logan Square and Fairmount, South Philadelphia, Fishtown, Kensington and Northern Liberties and North Philadelphia and Temple.
